Our Visit with Grandma Hass & Aunt Tania

A week sure does fly by when your husband is gone from Sunday- Thursday, and Friday-Sunday you are having fun!
The reason for Mr. Hass' trip to Idaho was not only to visit with family and squeeze in a dinner with friends, but he went to get our new motorhome.
We got a really great deal on it and are so excited to start doing some serious camping!
Mr. Hass' mom and sister drove back down to California in the motorhome with him.
It was a long drive.
The wind was awful.
It took them 14 hours on Wednesday to get from Boise to Las Vegas.
It took about 6 hours to get from Vegas to home on Thursday.
I think they were all pretty happy to climb out of that motorhome for a while.
Hannah, on the other hand, could not wait to get in!
She has known that we were going to be getting a motorhome for months now and she could hardly stand to wait one more second to see it.
The first thing she did was run up to her bedroom to bring down the suitcase that she has had packed to put in the motorhome for about 6 months.   That was awfully cute to watch.

After we ate dinner outside, the girls took baths and then wanted to sit in the motorhome.  So we sat outside on the curb, in the motorhome, playing Candyland and Chutes N Ladders until it was their bedtime.
Then the grown ups stayed up snacking and talking.
Have you tried these...   ?
I found them at Trader Joe's.  They are blueberry and acai juices covered in dark chocolate.  Yum.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday was supposed to be the warmest day of the weekend.  We got lucky, because that was the day we wanted to take the motorhome to the beach.
Red vines, sippy cups, beach bag.  Essentials.

The girls were so eager to buckle up inside the motorhome again.
They were all smiles the whole way there.
It was a beautiful day in Huntington.
A candid family shot.  (Thanks Diane!)
Claire was playing with this mussel and she was squeezing it open and shut making it talk and babbling "waa waaa waaa".  It was pretty funny.
Hannah was busy.
And things got a little sandy.
Claire liked to pick up the sand, let it fall between her fingers, kick it, throw it, ate it, you name it.
Very different from the little girl she was last summer who was scared to death to leave her beach towel.
Love this picture of Mr. Hass with the sailboat and the surf in the background.
Mr. H and Tania decided to take a swim.
We said they were crazy.
It was a beautiful day, but it was not a HOT day.
Hannah didn't seem to think the water was cold either.
We lasted until about 3pm, and then Claire dictated that it was time to go.
I don't mind sitting in traffic on the way home at all as long as there is a bathroom on board.  That was nice.
And you know these two crashed eventually.
We all had a great time together at the beach.
Us grown ups watched Secretariat that evening.  It was good and we all enjoyed it, and somehow stayed awake.
:)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday we just kind of hung out and laid low.
We made a trip to Sam's Club (bought Claire's new bed), visited,
and snacked on caprese al fresco before we bbq'd dinner.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday before their flight back to Boise, I made them pose for me so I could practice my photog skills.  ;)

Thanks for coming to visit Diane and Tania!
We had a great time and hope that you did too.

Anybody have a tissue???

because after I finish writing this post I am gonna need one.

This afternoon the girls were very excited to help us set up Claire's new bed.
I cleaned out the changing table drawers and wheeled it out of the room.
Then I called downstairs to Mr. Hass that I didn't like taking out all that was left of the baby stuff in my baby's room.
He asked if I was having a moment, and came upstairs to give me a hug.
Hannah was so thrilled for Claire.
She helped her Daddy carry it up piece by piece.
Claire got bored and went to her sister's room to do some cowering (coloring).
Look at how cute those little feet are just dangling below the chair.
How did Claire turn into a big girl?
We put the finishing touches on her new bed, and called for her to come and see.
 She said No.  I'm cowering.
And then we told her we'd get her a piece of licorice.
So she ran in.
She climbed right up and got comfy.
And then I think she got a little sleepy.
We are hoping to move the girls into the same room soon, but for now we will see how Claire does getting used to a bed.
The bedding is a set I had for Hannah's bed.
Although I did run to Target today to get a bedskirt.  The one I got reminded me of Claire because it had a layer of pink tulle over it that looked just like the pink tutu she wears all the time.
When the girls are sharing a room, I'd like to get them new bedding.  Something matching, girly and absolutely adorable.
We left the crib in there tonight just in case.
It felt different reading a story to her with a bed in the room.
I asked her if she would please stay little.
She just looked at me and smiled real big.
Then I said, no Claire, I mean it.  Stay little.
Then she gave me a big kiss.
I asked her where she wanted to sleep and she pointed to her crib.
Then Mr. H said are you sure you don't want to sleep in your new bed?
And she said "bed".
We tucked her in and she hasn't gotten up yet.
It's been an hour so far, so we will see.
I'm wondering what nap time will be like tomorrow.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go blow my nose.

Stay tuned for an update of our fun weekend with the extended Hass' family...
Does this look like the coppertone baby or what?

Random tid bits.

Hi there.
This post is going to be a bit random and all over the place.
I hope you can follow me.

Mr. Hass is on his way home right now.
He's been in Idaho since Sunday.
We all can't wait to see him.
Last time he went to Idaho, an hour after he left the house, our dog discovered a fallen nest of baby birds in our backyard and she killed/ate 3 of them.
I was horrified.
I don't think I had ever cleaned up dead baby birds before, and of course it happens when Mr. H is gone and I have to be the one who cleans them up.
We dealt with the wrath of the angry parents for weeks.
Fast forward one year later...
Mr. Hass left on Sunday morning.
Sunday afternoon, we spotted this
That's right.  A baby bird.
Minutes later, Abbey discovered it too.
It is a miracle that I kept the dog away from the bird long enough for it to live.
I put Abbey in the garage while trying to figure out what to do with this baby bird.
It's parents were flying all over squawking at me.
But they did not appear to be too concerned that it was stuck in my backyard.
Fast forward two days later,
baby bird is still in the yard and Hannah informs me that Abbey just killed it's mommy.
Nice.
She did.
Killed the mommy bird.
Or the daddy.
I'm not sure.
So, once again, while Mr H was in Idaho,
I have been home, breaking up fights, caring for kids, cleaning up after them, and also cleaning up more dead birds.

This unusually cool weather for May might have been a great gift for my garden.  Everything is thriving and it is so fun to watch the progress.  The tomatoe plants have tripled in size and already have flowers blooming.
There are not too many strawberries yet, but the plant is growing bigger.
I made quesadillas for the girls the other night and went out back and clipped some fresh cilantro for them.
How fun is that!

A couple of my blog friends have asked about the back of my haircut.
It's pretty hard to take a picture of the back yourself, but I tried.
I need to get the brazilan blowout done again so I have been wearing it curly a lot lately.

I saw a picture on Meg's blog from Whatever where she had kids chairs pulled up to her coffee table.  I thought that was such a great idea, and remembered the two mini parsons chairs that I had bought at Kirkland a while ago.  They fit underneath my Pier1 table perfectly.
The girls have been doing a lot of coloring  or co-wer-wing as Claire says it.  Get a look at Claire's bed head too would ya.  I get to comb that out everyday.
I hung my new vino sign from my parents.  I like it there.
Those striped bags on the table are teacher end of the year gifts.
I bought them all a double insulated cup and put a gift card to Golden Spoon inside.
Did you do teachers gifts?  What did you give?

Yesterday Hannah's school had an end of the year party.
Complete with three different water slides.
She woke up and ran in my room at 5:45am and yelled in my ear,
"Mom! Today is the day of my party!!"
I think she had fun.
At least, until this boy pinched her.
(Doesn't that mean he likes her?)

Mr. Hass' mom and his sister Tania will be coming back from Idaho with him today.  They are visiting until Sunday morning when they fly out.
We are having taco salad for dinner.
I bought the best apricots at Trader Joe's today.  They were so good.
And don't those strawberries look good?
After dropping Hannah off at school I saw that my new book had been delivered.
This is a cookbook by the same authors of the first Trader Joe's cookbook that I got.
This new book looks really good.
I'm off to go flip through it and wait for Mr. Hass to get home.

Oh, wait one more thing...
Am I the only one who is really sad about the end of Oprah?
I really am.
I love Oprah.
I have watched it for years.
I record it and watch it in the evenings when I find time.
Mr. H even watches it with me sometimes.
I thought her last show was so good.
I loved how she just spoke to the audience.
I saved it on my dvr to watch whenever I need a pep talk.
I love how she has used her stage as a platform over the years to do such good, and to teach others how to do the same.
I think Oprah is going to do bigger things now.
I wouldn't be suprised to see her run for president one day.
It could happen...

Cruise Food & Alcohol...

Ask and you shall receive...
most of you wanted to see the cruise food post first, so here it is my friends.
There really is nothing like the dining on a cruise ship.
Delicous food and drinks are all around you.
In fact, the very first thing we did upon boarding the ship, was make our way to the lido deck for lunch...
That's right.  We don't mess around.
This was my lunch on day 2.  But each day I ate a salad beast that looked something like this.  The coconut water I brought from home.  It was nice and refreshing.  And don't laugh at how big that salad is alright.  I ate every last drop of it.  Even those two beans that fell on the tray.  I ate those too. ;)
We had early seating in the dining room at 6pm.
That was fine, because at home we usually eat by 6 if not before then, but on a cruise ship, I made a note to myself- on future cruises (without children) always take the late dining at 8pm.  Sounds late I know, (well at least it sounds late to this 30 year old!) but then you can hang by the pool longer before having to go in and get cleaned up for dinner, and all of the good shows and comedians and all that fun jazz starts about 9:30pm-10 which is just after late dinner.
So, now that we have that noted, moving on.

Ya'll know how dinner works on a cruise ship right?
They bring you a menu with appetizers, starters, salads, soups, entrees, and desserts, and you can order something from each category, or two things from each, or basically as much food as you want!
Cute picture of my sister and David at dinner, and there I am in the background ordering my food.  I think I was saying, "I'll have one of those, and two of those, and better have two of these as well, and oh yes please get me that too...That's all..."
The first night I started out with a fruit bowl.
Then followed that with the tiger shrimp.
Followed by gazpoucho soup.  This was so good.  It tasted like a chilled mild salsa with fresh bits of onion in it.  I loved it.
For my main entree I ordered the mahi mahi and it was overcooked and very dry.  I was bummed because I love mahi mahi.
I was actually a bit full by this time (I had also eaten an entire bread basket but there's no picture of that) so I just took bites of my sister's dish.
Vegan pot pie with butternut squash and cinnamon.  Pot pie is not usually my thang but this was SO good.  I wished I ordered one myself.
The other bummer about early dining at 6pm is that I felt like they really rushed you to finish so they could get ready for the next group of hungry cruisers.  I understand that, but that's not how my family does it.  We like to sit and talk, and finish the last tasty bits of our wine, and then perhaps have a cup of coffee while we enjoy our dessert.  We still did that anyway, but I think they gave us the stink eye about it.
Carnival cruise is known for their famous chocolate melting lava cake.
Now, you know I am not a cake fan, but I do love chocolate.
And melting lava, whatever that is, yeah I love that too.
It was literally melt in your mouth, make you moan out loud good.

Day 2's dining experience did not disappoint.
This was the formal night.
AKA lobster night.
I started out with stuffed mushrooms in a delicous cheese sauce.
Those were good.
I probably could have eaten 8 more.
This was absolutely so delicious and refreshing.
Prosciutto with melons.  Quite tasty.  I loved the sweet and salty combination.
Pumpkin cinnamon soup.  Hmmm mmmm.
Somehow I missed this on the menu and I spotted David's sister eating it.  I asked her what it was, and then quickly flagged down our server, pointed, and said, "I want that."
And the mac daddy food of all.  Lobster tail, with shrimp, broccoli, and mashed potatoes.  You better believe I ate it all.
Doesn't this look so good?
It is chilled strawberry soup.  David ordered this, and again, it somehow snuck past me on the menu.  I wanted it.  I almost stole it from him, but I didn't.
Now I wish I got it.
See, you really do need to order one of everything on a cruise just to try it all out.

And most nights, more than just eating goes on in the dining room...
If you have never cruised before then I will tell you, each night at some point they will turn on some really fun music, and the waiters all walk through the room dancing by the tables, and trying to encourage the guests to jump up and join them.
This night my sister and I were just returning back from the bathroom when the dancing was going on.  We were already up, so we had to dance a little bit.  We're crazy.  And how's that double chin of mine eh?  Probably should have laid off that pumpkin soup.  ;)

Day 3.  Our last meal in the dining room.
Crab cakes.  Crab cakes are a favorite of mine and these were delicous.  The sauce on them was so good and there were tiny chopped granny smith apples underneath that complimented the flavors perfectly.
This was a grapefruit and melon arugula salad.  It had a citrus dressing and was very good.
Salmon was my entree and it was oh so so so so good.
Since I had the chocolate lava cake two nights in a row, I went with something different the last night.  Pineapple sherbet.  It was so yummy.

Each morning I had an egg white omlette with veggies and cottage cheese.  I never had my camera on me, but the last morning I did.  I did not want to stand in the omlette line so this is what I went with the last day.

Am I the only one who is hungry now???

Now I'd like to talk about alcohol...
How do you feel about it?
Do you drink?
Why or why not?

I am not a big drinker, but I do like to enjoy a drink or two now and then.
If you have read my profile, you know that I love love love red wine.
But I do not drink red wine, or anything else with the intention of getting drunk.
I never have.
I do not like to be drunk.
I am a control freak, and I do not like that feeling of not being in control.
I do however like the feeling after a glass of wine or two.  I think it is relaxing and most enjoyable.
I grew up with alcohol present in my home, but never abused.
My Dad would have a beer while watching the Laker game, my parents would enjoy a glass of wine occasionally with dinner, and they would even let us have a sip if we asked.
Not because they let us drink, but because to make something forbidden can sometimes do more damage than good.
They taught us what alcohol is, the dangers of it, and why it is never to be misused.
I think that because of that, I never had the desire to go crazy and experiment with alcohol once I was a teenager or when I turned 21.
Red wine makes me think of my family.  It makes me think of my Papa who knew a lot about red wine.  It makes me remember when I was a kid and after family dinners at my Grandma and Papa's house, all the adults would sit around the table with their glass of wine talking and telling stories.
Some day I want to visit lots of vineyards in Italy and learn more about wine.

I also had sambuca after dinner every night .
My parents would have sambuca on occasion, and my Grandma said that her and Papa used to have sambuca every night when they were in Hawaii.
The three coffee beans have to be in it.  They stand for health, wealth, and prosperity.
Sambuca smells like black licorice, and I do not like black licorice at all.
I don't think it tastes like that though.
You just take little tiny sips and let the taste roll around on your tongue.
My Grandma said it is supposed to settle your stomach after dinner too.
I thought it was really refreshing.
During the day I usually just had one or maybe two drinks by the pool.  Followed by a huge jug of water.  The older I get the more easily dehydrated I get too.  I also am very aware of the extra calories and sugar in a pina colada.  So I kept that to a minimum.
Sitting at the bar and talking after dinner was one of my favorite things.
We would finish sipping our sambuca, and possibly finish the night with a martini.
(I had my first dirty martini.  I knew I'd like a dirty martini.)
My Grandma and I talked one night about the difference in the way some people drink.
Some people don't seem to care what it is that they are drinking at all, as long as it gets them drunk.
I think that is abusing alcohol.
I know that there are some who simply can not drink at all because the temptation to abuse is so strong.
I think a lot of how you drink (if you drink) has to do with how you were raised, and of course how you are chemically wired too.  I know that alcoholics simply can not help that they are alcholics.  Alcoholism really is a disease.
So I guess that is where drinking gets tricky.
It really is different for everyone.

I'd love to know your thoughts on the subject.
If you drink, do you know when to say when???
